Physical Education

St Gregory and St Patrick's Catholic Infant School's Physical Education vision is:

At St Gregory and St Patrick's, we want all of our children to understand the importance of, and have an enjoyment in physical activity, as well as an appreciation of a healthy lifestyle which stays with them as they move forward in their lives.  We recognise that PE can teach through the physical, and it offers a large contribution to children’s physical and mental well-being.  Through our curriculum provision, we ensure children are exposed to a wide range of sporting skills, including running and jumping, throwing, catching kicking, striking, dance, gymnastics.

In our school, the teachers work alongside Mr Marshall and Mr Rowell, who helps deliver multi-skills and Mrs Mason, who helps to deliver gymnastics and dance.

When the opportunity arises, we also take part in different sporting events such as a whole school sports day and participating in local competitions. We promote a healthy and active lifestyle within the community; encouraging children's participation in after school sports clubs and competitions.

We also try and encourage our children and parents to carry out physical activities at home. Each class has a special 'PE bag' and every Friday, one child from each class gets the opportunity to take this bag home and carry out some physical activities at home (a variety of resources are included in the bag to support with the activities).

Swimming

On Wednesdays, we have been very fortunate to have a swimming slot at Mayfield/St Benedict’s School. Some of our children have been swimming for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it! They are much more confident in water which is great to see.

National Women and Girls in Sport

This year, we celebrated National Women and Girls in Sport Day with some very special visitors. We were so grateful to have Workington Reds Ladies in to give our KS1 classes some coaching tips and referee us in some mini football games. It is so nice for our children to see football is a sport for anyone!

After school Clubs

On Thursdays, we have after school sports clubs ran by our HLTA, Sarah Peck. Below are some pictures of our previous sports clubs that we have had.

These bags go home with a different child each week. They are to encourage children to practice the skills they have learnt in school whilst at home.

National Fitness Day 2022

On Wednesday 21st September 2022, our whole school celebrated National Fitness Day (from Pre-Nursey right up to Year 2). We took part in the 10 minutes of exercise at 10am when we did the daily mile altogether. Throughout the rest of the day, we looked at other ways we could improve our fitness including lots of exercise and ways to have a healthy diet. Look below to see some photos of what we got up to!

“Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”
